To celebrate Sign Language Week (16th - 22nd March 2026), pupils in the RP have produced a special BSL storytelling video of the book Flooded.
One of our Year 4 pupils signs the story in British Sign Language, bringing the book to life through expressive storytelling. At the end of the video, other pupils demonstrate key signs from the story, helping everyone learn some BSL vocabulary.
This recognises British Sign Language as a rich language and a key part of Deaf culture and identity. We are very proud of the pupils’ confidence, creativity, and teamwork in sharing BSL and Deaf culture with our school community.
This work also helps prepare the children for our visit to the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford on Tuesday 24th March, to see the animated film Flow (2024). Flow is a wordless story, so children can enjoy and understand it through visuals, movement, and emotion rather than spoken language.

We had a busy morning on Tuesday, 11th March, with a visit from the Bradford City of Culture 2025 Social Media Team! They came to follow Sign Language Week 2025 and to explore this year’s theme: "More than a language – culture, community, and belonging."
As well as creating our own posters and videos, we collaborated with Bradford City of Culture 2025 to support them with developing an informative video all about Sign Language and the Deaf culture for their social media.
The RP children led a whole school assembly and they enjoyed teaching the children signs for all the different types of transport. They all had an amazing time showing the children how to sign and use the correct handshapes alongside using facial expressions to make the whole experience fun for the learners. Our children embraced being Deaf and felt proud to share BSL with their hearing peers. They showed such confidence, and all the RP staff were extremely proud of them!
Even our lovely school kitchen staff went out of their way and decorated the canteen to highlight Sign Language Week for everyone in school!
