PSHE Overview

Intent

  • At Swain House Primary School, we want to enable our children to become healthy, independent, productive and responsible members of society
  • We provide enrichment opportunities to engage pupils and develop their cultural capital that is recognised as essential if children are to succeed mini first aid, road safety sessions, Relationships and Sex Education day (RSE Day), drug presentations, visits from West Yorkshire Police, visits from the charity Step2, Childrens Mental Health Week, discussions on Picture News, Speak Out. Stay Safe. by the NSPCC among many others
  • Our Relationships and Sex Education from Early Years to Year 6 enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives
  • We aim for our curriculum to teach pupils about tolerance and diversity in our society, including respecting everyone
 
Implementation

  • At Swain House Primary School, we use the published resource of SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship) to teach our PSHE curriculum. It is a spiral curriculum following six theme per year - Me and My Relationships, Valuing Difference, Keeping Myself Safe, Rights and Responsibilities, Being My Best, Growing and Changing from Early Years to Year 6
  • Each year, SCARF come to school with the Life Caravan. This is used by every pupil in school and follows a bespoke package of learning
  • We work closely with West Yorkshire Police who come into school to talk to pupils about weapons, antisocial behaviour and healthy relationships
  • All pupils in Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 learn about puberty as part of our RSE curriculum and we work closely with the charity Step2 to provide these lessons
  • Each theme begins with a letter to parents about the vital support they can provide, a list of important vocabulary the pupils will be learning and the objectives that will be covered
 
Impact

  • The impact of our PSHE curriculum is through pupil voice, the culture, behaviour and attitudes of pupils and their books
  • Pupils are assessed against the half termly objectives for each theme
  • Pupils develop into independent thinkers and are ready for the next stage of their learning
  • Pupils reflect on their learning and discuss where their learning might take them to next
  • Our pupils are able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills to help navigate themselves through modern life
  • They are tolerant and appreciative of others and the diversity of society
  • Pupils are able to understand, manage and discuss their emotions
  • Pupils know how to look after their own mental health and well-being through myHappymind, Childrens Mental Health Weeks and the weekly lessons and assemblies
  • Pupils are able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future
