Intent
At Swain House Primary School, we believe that the art and design curriculum, through the use of Kapow, should:
- Engage, inspire and challenge all pupils.
- Develop children’s confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art.
- Give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability.
- Allow children the time to nurture their talents and interests.
- Enable children to express their ideas and thoughts about the world.
- Allow children to learn about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond
Implementation
Through using Kapow, we are delivering a curriculum which:
- Develops children’s knowledge and understanding of key artists and art movements.
- Scaffold and support essential and age-appropriate sequenced learning.
- Forms cross-curricular links.
- Embeds creativity.
- Supports children in making their own creative choices and decisions.
- Is knowledge-rich, unique and personal to the child.
- Is practical in nature and encourages exploratory and experimental learning through the use of sketchbooks.
The Kapow Art revised scheme of work is designed with five strands that run throughout. These are:
- Generating ideas
- Using sketchbooks
- Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating and analysing Units of lessons are sequential, allowing children to build their skills and knowledge, applying them to a range of outcomes.
The formal elements, a key part of the National Curriculum, are also woven throughout units.
Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Units in each year group are organised into four core areas:
- Drawing
- Painting and mixed-media
- Sculpture and 3D
- Craft and design
Each year group studies three Art and Design units during the year, alternating with Design and Technology each half term.
Impact
At Swain House Primary School, we will measure the impact of our Art and Design Curriculum through the use of:
- Summative assessment
- The school website, where photographs or videos of learning can be uploaded
- Images/ videos
- Pupil interviews
- Art and Design sketchbooks
- Learning walks
Children will meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National Curriculum for Art and Design
Year 1 completed the Art & Design unit, 'Making Your Mark'.
We used a variety of techniques to create different patterns. We also listened to the sound of waves to help us create an ocean themed picture. At the end we created our very own still life image of an item in the room.
