Intent
At Swain House Primary School, we believe that, the Design and Technology curriculum should:
- Inspire pupils to be innovative and creative thinkers, who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideas, creation and evaluation
- Enable pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling and testing
- Ensure pupils have an understanding of the impact of design and technology on their lives and on others, to encourage them to become imaginative, inventive and enterprising citizens
- Provide an exciting, engaging curriculum where our pupils experience hands on learning and expert visitors to enhance their understanding of design and technology
- Provide a design and technology curriculum with appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum Design and Technology Programmes of study
Implementation
The Kapow Design and Technology scheme of work consists of four strands that run throughout. These are:
- Design
- Make
- Evaluate
- Technical Knowledge
By following the Kapow units, children will develop knowledge and skills in:
- Cooking and Nutrition
- Mechanisms/Mechanical Systems
- Structures
- Textiles
- Electrical Systems
- Digital World
Each year group will cover three Design and Technology units throughout the year, following the Kapow scheme.
These will alternate with an Art&Design unit each half term.
Design and Technology units are taught as a weeklong block of lessons each time.
Impact
At Swain House Primary School, we will measure the impact of our Design and Technology Curriculum through the use of:
- Summative assessment
- The school website, where photographs or videos of learning can be uploaded
- Images/ videos
- Pupil interviews
- Design and Technology books
- Learning walks
